Tubifera

Tubifera ferruginosa

Tubifera is a genus of slime molds from the group of Myxogastria. It includes five types.

Features

The fruiting bodies are apparent Aethalien from numerous, closely pressed against one another standing sporangia, sometimes there are also smaller, loose or bundled small group standing. The elongated sporangia are ocher to dark brown, shine or shimmer and open to release spores at the far end.

The Hypothallus is sponge-like, occasionally elevated to a stalk- like, stocky, dark-colored structure or, at Tubifera bombarda, delicate and thin film-like. The membranous, single-layer peridium is constantly in the bottom half. A Pseudocapillitium may be absent or present. The spores are pale yellow to reddish brown.

Dissemination

Tubifera ferruginosa and Tubifera microsperma are much more common and more frequently than the other species of the genus. Up to Tubifera casparyii all species are also common in the tropics.

Systematics and history of research

The genus was first described in 1873 by Józef Thomasz Rostafiński, type species is the original, first described as a Stemonitis Type Tubifera ferruginosa. The genus includes five species, including:

  • Tubifera ferruginosa
  • Tubifera microsperma
  • Tubifera casparyii
  • Tubifera bombarda
