Tucuruí Dam

The 2875 km ² large Tucuruí reservoir ( Represa Tucuruí ) is located in the Brazilian state of Pará.

Its main tributary is the Rio Tocantins in Marabá whose confluence lies on the south bank of the reservoir; his discharge and the dam are located in the north near Tucuruí. The 1984 -built dam has a height of 106 meters and a building volume of 85.2 million cubic meters. Other definitions refer to a volume of only 43 or 55 million m³.

In Tucuruí also the second largest with a capacity of 7960 MW hydroelectric plant in Brazil was built on the Rio Tocantins. It annually provides about 21,000 GWh of electricity and supplies large parts of the states of Pará and Maranhão. The aluminum industry in these two states consumed a large portion of the electricity produced here.

Prior to the flooding of the Tucuruí reservoir, which has a maximum of 45.8 billion cubic meters of storage space, the area was not cleared. As a result, now decomposes to water the existing biomass, whereby methane gas leakage.
