Tudorella

Tudor Ella ferruginea ( Lamarck, 1822)

Tudor Ella is a genus in the country live snails from the family of land snails ( Pomatiidae ) in the order of Sorbeoconcha. The oldest type is derived from the Miocene of France.

Features

The housing of the representatives of the genus Tudor Ella reach about 12 to 22 mm in height and 10 to 16 mm width. You have 5 to 6 moderately to well sprung coils, which are deducted from a shallow to moderately deep seam of each other. The housings are oblong- conical in shape with a blunt apex. The last turn passed 5 /8 to 3/4 of the total height of the housing. The sculpture consists of a net-like pattern that is often weaker on the final turn. A total of about 20 to 30, spiral strips are provided. The protoconch shows a micro sculpture of microscopic small pits. The mouth opening is oval, rounded at the base and at an angle approximately in the top corner. The aperture rim is easy and hardly expanded. In all species of the housing of the female in the average are larger than the housings of the male.

The operculum is ovate and calcified. It has only 1 ¼ to three turns. The turns anticlockwise. The nucleus is located close to the edge. The operculum sits low to moderate deep in the mouth.

Geographical distribution

The extant species of the genus Tudor Ella live in the coastal regions of the western Mediterranean and North Africa; located in North Africa to about 80 km from the coast. They live there most of the time buried deep in the soil or leaf litter under limestone rocks. They are only active in damp weather.

Taxonomy

The taxon was proposed by Paul Fischer 1885 work " Manuel de conchyliologie et de paléontologie conchyliologique " as cesarean section of Cyclostoma. The name Tudor Ella appears in this work without definition, only with the mention of a kind, Cyclostoma ferruginea Lamarck. According to the International Regulations for Zoological Nomenclature, this was at the time a valid proposal, Tudor Ella Fischer, 1885 is available. The number of species in the genus Tudor Ella is still somewhat uncertain. Three types are generally recognized. Pfenninger et al. (2010) go against it out of eight extant species, of which two undescribed species. A not yet described in detail in the literature population from southern Portugal could be another undescribed species, according to F. Welter Schultes.
