Tuiloma Neroni Slade

Neroni Slade Tuiloma ( born April 8, 1941 in Samoa) is a politician, lawyer and diplomat from Samoa and current Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat. From 2003 to 2006 he was a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Studies and climb to the Attorney General of Samoa

Slade finished his studies in law at Victoria University of Wellington in 1967 with a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ). He then spent a year working in a law firm in Wellington.

From 1969 to 1983 he worked in the administration of justice of Samoa. First, he was from 1969 to 1973 Chief Legal Adviser and Chief Prosecutor in the Attorney General's office. In the meantime, he graduated in 1971, the Hague Academy of International Law in The Hague, as well as a stage in the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat in New York. From 1973 to 1975 he was Legal Adviser of the Legislative Assembly ( Fono ) of Samoa, until 1976 also director of Samoan delegation to the III. UN Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III).

1976 Slade was appointed Attorney General of Samoa. This office he held until 1982. From 1980 to 1982 he was also acting President of the Supreme Court of Samoa.

1983 Slade was Deputy Director of the Legal Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London. During the following ten-year career, he won several legal advisor conferences of the Member States to different legal topics.

Ambassador and chairman of AOSIS

From 1993 to 2003 Slade was Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Samoa to the United Nations. He was also accredited as Ambassador to the United States and as High Commissioner in Canada. During this time he was repeatedly participants in international conferences on issues of use of nuclear weapons, environmental protection and climate change.

Slade from 1997 to 2002 as a successor to Annette des Iles Chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States ( AOSIS ). Succeeded in this office in 2002 Jagdish Koonjul.

Judge at the International Criminal Court

The first meeting of the Assembly of States Parties of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Slade chose the 28th ballot on 7 February 2003 in New York City in the panel of judges. His term began - as all other judges of the ICC also - on 11 March 2003 with the power of the oath of office. As of July 2004, he was Chief Judge of the Second Vorverhandlungskammer, who was then seized of the situation in Uganda ( situation ICC-02/04 ). At the fourth meeting of the Assembly of States Parties in January 2006, he was not re-elected, so his tenure as scheduled after three years ended on 10 March 2006.

Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat

Beginning of August 2008 was the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, the Slades nomination for the office of Secretary-General of the Secretariat known. The nomination was made by the Government of Samoa. The Secretary General Greg Urwin last had abandoned the exercise of his duties in May 2008 for health reasons and died on 9 August 2008. During its 39th meeting, on 20 August 2008 in Niue chose the forum Slade for a term of three years for new Secretary-General. On 13 October 2008, he took office.
