Tullamore

Tullamore (Irish Tullow Mhór " Big Hill" ) is a town in County Offaly in the Republic of Ireland.

Tullamore has 11,375 inhabitants (as of 2011), is located in the Irish Midlands and is the county town of Offaly. It is the economic and industrial center of the region. The place is known internationally especially through the whiskey brand Tullamore Dew. In the vicinity of Tullamore Irish broadcasting RTÉ operation until April 24, 2008 a receivable in Germany medium wave transmitter ( transmitting frequency: 567 kHz ), the 290 meter high transmission tower is the tallest structure in Ireland.

History

Tullamore, was founded in 1570 as a British settlement in Ireland from the family Moore, the later Earl of Charleville. 1785 there was a fire disaster when a hot air balloon caught fire after an emergency landing. Many old buildings in the city date from the time of reconstruction. The Grand Canal connects Tullamore with Dublin since 1798. In the same year Charleville Castle was completed. 1835 Tullamore capital of the county Offaly.

Tullamore Dew

1829 built a distillery in Tullamore Michael Molloy, who came into possession of the Daly family later. The Whiskey of the Dalys found good sales in the domestic market as well as in England and the Commonwealth. The name of Tullamore Dew is the initials of the future manager of the distillery, Daniel E Williams ( DEW ), and is today one of the most famous Irish whiskey brands. Due to the poor economic situation in Ireland, the production was set in 1954 and sold the brand to John Power & Son, Dublin. The distillery has since never used again and fell into disrepair. Today, only remnants of individual buildings reminiscent of the once important industry in Tullamore. A former warehouse on the Grand Canal was rebuilt in 2000 to the Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre. An eponymous limited edition whiskey is available in stores. Tullamore Dew is now produced at the distillery in Midleton, County Cork, and is available as standard, 10 year old single malt or 12 year old Special Reserve.
