Tunnel of Arrissoules
The Arrissoules tunnel together with the Pomy - Tunnel, the longest tunnel in the Swiss highway A1, Switzerland, the main traffic artery.
It is located in the French- speaking part of Switzerland on the section Bern -Lausanne between terminals Estavayer -le- Lac and Yverdon- les- Bains. The two -tube tunnel measures 2987 meters and is situated in a part on the territory of the canton of Fribourg, the other part in the Canton of Vaud. It crosses several fields, wooded areas and rural villages ( including the village Arrissoules ) in the gently undulating western Swiss Plateau.
The tunnel was built in the course of the expansion of the last section of the A1 between Payerne and Yverdon- les- Bains. It was opened after several years of construction in 2001. Not only topographical but also environmental causes were responsible for the construction of this relatively long tunnel.
