Tuomo Mannermaa

Tuomo Mannermaa ( born September 29, 1937 in Oulu) is a Finnish Lutheran theologian. He worked from 1980 until his retirement Professor of Ecumenical Theology at the University of Helsinki.

Mannermaa was known for his criticism of the Leuenberger Agreement and for his contributions to the dialogue with the Orthodox Church. With his students (including Simo Peura, Risto Saarinen, Antti Raunio ) he founded the so-called new Finnish Luther School, which moved Luther's understanding of justification in a close relationship with the Orthodox understanding of " theosis " ( deification ).
