Tuone Udaina

Tuone Udaina ( Italian Antonio Udina, * 1840? † June 10, 1898 ), named after his profession also Barbur ( dalmatisch hairdresser ), was the last known speaker of the Dalmatian, a Romance language, the upstream on the Dalmatian coast and on the islands of Krk, Cres, Rab and spoken. He spoke the Northern dialect or vegliotischen ( dalmatisch Viklasun ), which on the island of Krk ( dalmatisch Vikla ) was used. He was killed in an accident at his work from a mine.

The Dalmatian was not Udainas actual native language. He had learned as a child when his parents sometimes spoke at home, because they thought Tuone did not understand Dalmatisch. Before his death, he told the linguist Matteo Giulio Bartoli ". El mi Tuota e la maja Niena favlua cosaic in veclisun, jali favlua ce jali kredua ce ju non kapaja, ma ju Toc" ( My father and my mother have spoken, they have spoken Viklasun because they thought that I did not understand, but I understood everything. )

As Bartoli visited him in 1898, Tuone Udaina had not spoken a Dalmatisch nearly 20 years. At the time of research by Bartoli Udaina was almost deaf and had no teeth. Nevertheless, it succeeded the linguist to write about 2800 words Dalmatian and some stories, even from Udainas own life. Bartoli's book is the most important source of information about the Dalmatian language.
