Tuotilo

Tuotilo of St. Gallen, in the older literature called predominantly Tutilo of St. Gallen or Tutilo, (c. 850; ? † April 27 (also March 28 ) 913 (also 915 ) in St. Gallen) was a monk in the monastery of St. Gall.

Life

About life Tuotilos is not much Profound known. On the one hand there is a rather anecdotal and literary source in the descriptions of Ekkehard IV in the history of the monastery of St. Gall, the Casus Sancti Galli. [ ADB 1] It is Tuotilo together with Notker Balbulus and Ratpert as students Isos in the Seven called liberal arts. The three monks were by Ekkehard close friends. Tuotilo is portrayed as a muscular man with a clear voice. He is also highlighted as a poet, musician, painter, goldsmith and creator of fine carvings especially the ivory tablets of the Gospel Longum.

On the other hand can be found in the records of the St. Gallen monastery nine mentions Tuotilos in different functions.

Tuotilo has never been officially canonized, or even beatified, but was nevertheless to about the 17th century. worshiped in St. Gallen and the surrounding area by way of a Volkskanonisation almost as a saint. [EP 1] still be found in the St. Galler Collegiate Church is a representation of Tuotilo as a monk with palette and brush. [EP 2] The chapel of St. Catherine had the nickname St. Tuotilo or simply St. Güetelen, which according to EC Ruffled a variant of Tutilo is. [EP 3] [ EGR 5]

In Gustav Schwab there is an anecdote about a confrontation with Tuotilos Sindolf based on Ekkehard Report: Sindolf secretly overheard before the window a conversation between the three fellow monks. When the remarkable three this away Notker in the church and Ratpert goes to the house to beat Sindolf with a whip. Meanwhile Tuotilo has opened the window and pulls Sindolf hard on the hair. The hurrying due to the outcry monks he explained, than to realize that Sindolf is the victim: Woe is me, that I have laid my hand to the Bishop confidant.

Ekkehard describes a wide range of travel Tuotilos in monastery affairs. He had worked among other things as a buyer of substances in Mainz and as an artist in Metz. [ JDRS 1]

Work

In the codices Sangallenses there are still some works that are attributed in whole or in part Tuotilo.

Here is a selection:

  • St. Gallen, Abbey Library, Cod Sang. 53, bound in ivory for the Gospel Longum. [ AvE 1] This ivory tablets are probably the most important carving Tuotilos. [ EGR 6]
  • St. Gallen, Abbey Library, Cod Sang. 382, untitled. [ GS 1] This codex contains, among other things tropics of Tuotilo.
  • St. Gallen, Abbey Library, Cod Sang. 484, St. Gallen Tropar. [ BMVs 1] This manuscript contains the well-known, among other things cantandus Hodie est ... ( p. 13 to p. 17). [ EGR 7]
  • St. Gallen, Abbey Library, Cod Sang. 546, Collectio S. Gallensis troporum et sequentiarum [ GS 2]

Tuotilo has been active in various artistic fields by Ekkehard.

He lifts him in particular emerged as a major writer of the tropics. Since tropics, unlike the sequences were not associated generally with an author's name, it is usually not easy to bring Tuotilo with a specific trope in context. We shall therefore refer only representative on the Weihnachtstropus Hodie cantandus which is generally attributed at least in part Tuotilo. Tuotilo not only has written tropics, but according to Ekkehard itself makes music (harp and vocals) and students given music lessons. [ EGR 8] [ KHW 1]

Ekkehard boasts Tuotilo also as a painter and sculptor ( sculptors, carvers ). In addition to his surviving until today carvings on ivory tablets of the Gospel Longum he is said to have adorned an altar in Mainz and does a very similar job in Metz. None of the latter works is retained. [ EGR 9]

Emperor Charles III. is said to have regretted, according to Ekkehard that such a talent is hidden behind convent walls, he would rather have had Tuotilo in its wake. [ EVSG 1] [ 2 JDRS ]
