Turhan Selçuk

Turhan Selçuk ( * 1922 in Milas, † 11 March 2010 in Istanbul) was a Turkish political cartoonist. He is considered one of the best known and most important cartoonists in Turkey and founder of the modern direction of the Turkish caricature. Because of his drawing style he is known as " Turkish Picasso caricature ".

Short Biography

His first cartoon he published in 1941 in some regional newspapers in Adana and Istanbul. In 1943 he founded the Journal of Humor Akbaba. 1951 his works were exhibited for the first time. Shortly thereafter he founded the satirical magazine .41 Bucuk. Since 1954 regularly work of Selçuk in national newspapers of Turkey (among Aydede, Yon, Devrim Ornegi, Yeni istanbul, Milliyet, Akşam ), where he was partially chief cartoonist. Through the adventures of the created by him amiably bizarre figure of the " Abdül Canbaz " (typically with a penny farthing on the way) he was in Turkey very well known and popular with the reading public. Through its exhibition " Human Rights" in 1992, his international fame grew.

Selçuk was repeatedly censured for his social criticism in Turkey, detained, tortured and covered up to his death, with several court cases. Outside of Turkey him an honorary doctorate was awarded twice and he has received numerous awards. His works can be found in several museums, as in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

His brother was the journalist İlhan Selçuk.

Issued for several years, including in 2006 at the Art Center Berlin, 2008 on the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair in the University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg, then in Marburg Town Hall, Offenbach City Hall and in the office of the Goethe- Institut in Schwäbisch Hall.
