Turibius of Mogrovejo

Toribio de Mogrovejo alias Turibius of Lima ( born November 18, 1538 Mayorga, Spain, † March 23, 1606 in Sana, Peru ) was a Spanish missionary and second Archbishop of Lima. He was canonized and declared the patron saint of Latin American Bishops. Of the locals, he is revered as a " Protector of the Indians ".

Life

St. Toribio was born in 1538 in Spain and was president of the church court of Granada, when the Spanish King Philip II, who had learned from his great talent to the Pope for appointment as Archbishop of Lima suggested him. Toribio 1581 came to Lima and engaged there with all his strength for the fight against moral and spiritual decay by strongly condemned all forms of abuse and oppression, which he created many enemies. He attended the entire territory of his archdiocese, which he mostly traveled on foot or on a mule three times. He converted many Indians, organized meetings for priests and bishops who founded the first seminary, took the religious people at work in the parishes, and during his time as bishop, the number of parishes and mission centers doubled. He shared everything he had with the poor. On March 23, 1606, he died on Thursday of Holy Week in a secluded chapel at the Indians, where he preached and the Indians strengthened in their faith. He was called by Pope Benedict XIII. Canonized in 1726.

Others

On 27 April 2006, the feast of St. Toribio in the Cathedral of Lima solemnly with a congress, a procession of the relics of the saint and a holy mass was celebrated. Besides the Congress, the Archdiocese organized numerous other initiatives. In addition, brochures were published books and other information to the figure and to the efforts of St. Toribio.
