Turnu Măgurele

Turnu Măgurele ( old name Turnu, German: Großnikopel ), is a town in Romanian county Teleorman. It is located about 125 km south-west of Bucharest, on the border with Bulgaria on the edge of Wallachia. Turnu Măgurele was built near the medieval port of Turnu. The city is located northeast of the confluence of the Olt and Danube. On the opposite, the Bulgarian bank is Nikopol.

Historical

There are remains of a Roman bridge over the Danube, build Constantine the Great in 330 has had. The city's name means " mountain tower " and refers to the tower of defense walls built by a Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century fortress. Ruins of this are still present today.

Turnu 1417-1829 was ruled by the Ottomans, the opposite Nikopol defeated the Turks in 1396 a Hungarian- French- Romanian crusader army and conquered the territories south of the Danube.

The river Olt in turn was to the 14th century and again in the 18th century the border between the "little ones" and the rest of Wallachia, Turnu an important border fortress.
