Tusket River

The Tusket River ( Nikitaouksit, " Big forked tidal river ") is the main river flowing through Yarmouth County in southwestern Nova Scotia.

Its tributaries are the Carlton, Silver, Napier, Caribou and Quinan River. The Tusket River is considered as a recreational area and is a popular destination for canoeing sports and fishing.

Ecology

The ecosystem of the river was threatened in 1986 by the tin mining the Rio Algom Mine. Interventions by conservationists and finally the closure of the mine in 1992 prevented further pollution. After the ecosystem recovered quickly, however, the same is now threatened again by clearcutting of timber industry. There are now efforts to provide adjacent riparian areas protected to preserve the originality of the river landscape.
