Tygerberg

Province

Tygerberg is the name of a district in the northeast of Cape Town in South Africa, and the hills in the neighborhood.

Geography

The district is located about 25 kilometers from the center of Cape Town.

History

Dutch and German settlers who populated the Cape from 1652, named the hill after the streaked and spotted impression that the former vegetation caused, "Tiger Mountain", although there indeed were many big cats, but no tigers in the region at that time.

In 1996, the six suburbs Bellville, Durbanville, Goodwood, Parow, Khayelitsha and Mfuleni were pooled for City of Tygerberg.

Infrastructure

Part of the hill has been designated a nature reserve Tygerberg Nature Reserve. In Tygervalley is a newly established residential development with artificial lakes and several restaurants, modeled on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town called Tygervalley Waterfront. Adjacent is a large shopping center, the Tygervalley Shopping Centre.

South of the Tygerberg is the Tygerberg Hospital. It is the University Hospital of the University of Stellenbosch with its own campus where there are clinical- theoretical, diagnostic and education-related facilities. The campus also are several dormitories and a student center cafeteria.

For the City of Tygerberg Bellville belongs to the campus of the University of the Western Cape (UWC ).
