Tyrone Guthrie

Sir William Tyrone Guthrie ( born July 2, 1900 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England; † May 15, 1971 in Newbliss, County Monaghan, Ireland ) was one of the most important theater directors and theater directors of the 20th century.

Life

He was born the son of Dr. Thomas Guthrie and Norah Power. His sister Susan Margaret married his close friend Hubert Butler, the important texts for Guthrie's production of Anton Chekhov's " Cherry Orchard ", 1934 for the first time translated into English for this purpose. He studied at Oxford University, where he was actively involved in the student theater and for a season at the newly built " Oxford Playhouse" worked. In 1924 Guthrie to the BBC in Belfast as a radio announcer and began to produce pieces for radio. Temporarily staged for one year for the Scottish National player before he returned to the BBC to be one of the first writers of theatrical radio plays.

His career as a famous theater director began in Glasgow ( 1926-28 ), Cambridge ( 1929-30 ) and from 1931 in London. As director and director of London's Old Vic and Sadler 's Wells Theatre, he developed his special interest in Shakespeare's plays and the opera. In the 1940s he began taking increasingly critical appreciation to stage operas, including a realistic Carmen Sadler 's Wells Theatre and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. From 1953 he led for four years, the newly formed Festival Theatre, Stratford in Canada, which had a decisive influence on the direction of the development of the theater scene in Canada. In 1956 he won the Tony Award as Best Director for Thornton Wilder's " The Matchmaker ". In 1961 he was knighted by the British Queen Elizabeth II. In 1963 he founded the " Guthrie Theater" in Minneapolis, which leaned on the model of the theater in Stratford.

In the preface to his biography of James Forsyth wrote: "He finally came to the legitimate claim for the title of Britain's most important theater director of his time. " Guthrie returned in his later years with his wife from England in the Irish homestead, where he as child had spent his holidays. He died in 1971 at the age of 70 at his home in Newbliss in Ireland. After his death in 1971 he left his house the Irish State to the condition of the buildings an artist center, " Tyrone Guthrie Centre " at Newbliss, two and a half hours drive north from Dublin to make. The center was opened in 1981.
