Ubertino of Casale

Ubertinus de Casale, Italian Uber Tino da Casale, German Ubertino of Casale (* 1259 in Casale Monferrato; † after 1328 ) was an Italian theologian, who was as a spokesman with Angelus Clarenus and Peter John Olivi to the flow of Spirituals within the Franciscan Order.

Ubertino practiced in his extant writings, strongly criticized the reigning Popes. In his essay arborvitae crucifixae he indicated in the fifth book, the interpretation of the Book of Revelation, the first beast (Rev. 13) Boniface VIII ( 1294-1303 ), the second to Benedict XI. ( 1303-1304 ). Even the number 666 (Revelation 13:18) is interpreted to Benedict ( Βενεδίκτος with Greek letters).

About Tino da Casale occurs in Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose on. He is identified as the copyright of the book Arbor vitae crucifixae, allegedly the main template for Dante Alighieri's " great poem " was thus probably the Divina Commedia is meant.
