UEFA Euro 1996 qualifying

The qualifying matches for the European Football Championship 1996 took place until 13 December 1995 of 20 April 1994.

47 of 48 member countries of the UEFA played under from the 15 grid positions for the first conducted with 16 participants EM 1996. England was set as the host country and completed the field of 16 finalists.

Qualification mode

The qualifications included 231 games, of which 230 matches were played in group mode. The 47 teams were drawn against each one of eight groups in the qualifying draw. Seven of these eight groups each played with six teams in a group were five teams against each other.

Directly for the final competition, which qualified eight group winners of the group games and the top six runners-up. The last spot played the two worst runners-up in a match on neutral territory among themselves.

Due to the political changes at the beginning of the 1990s many newly independent nations began participating in the qualification. It concerned are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Georgia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Belarus. Furthermore, also took Israel and Liechtenstein for the first time in the qualification to a European part.

The first time was the three-point rule for a European Championship qualifier.

Decision-making

The runners-up of each group were then compared in a table. The first six teams this table qualify automatically for the European Championship. The two last placed had a playoff for the last free place. To have opportunities for comparison, only the results of the teams against the First, Third and Fourth of the respective qualifying group were used.
