Ulla Procopé

Ulla Procopé ( born 1921 in Helsinki, Finland, † 1968), full name Ulrika Eleonora Matilda Procopé - Nyman, was a Finnish ceramist and designer.

Procopé was a graduate of the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

Since 1948, she participated in the design department of Arabia. At first she was entrusted with the development of new forms. When she had to give up in 1951 to work on the potter's wheel for health reasons, Kaj Franck took her to his team. At the Milan Triennale in 1957 she was awarded an honorary diploma.

Ulla Procopé remained unobtrusively in a time when Finnish designer attracted international attention. Its merit it remains to have made approaches of the pottery for industrially manufactured mass-produced fruitful.

  • Service Valencia, faience, 1960. Inspired by the intensely colored studio pottery of Spain was created in 1960, a fruit dish with dark cobalt blue decoration. This enabled - due to the lower firing temperature in comparison to the hard-paste porcelain - the glaze added admittedly bold colors. Valencia is now considered classics in the style typical of Arabia.
  • Service Ruska, gray stoneware, 1960. Presented at the Milan Triennale, the dish is characterized by extreme resistance. It belongs to the table fine cookware that should the housewife bring less washing up. The individually ausbrennende mottled brown glaze made ​​each piece a unique piece and gave the impression of manual production. With Ruska was the combination of rustic, practical and clear form to the typical feature of Finnish ceramics of the sixties and seventies.
