Ulla (Talmudist)

Ulla bar Ishmael ( Ismael Ulla bar, in the Babylonian Talmud Ulla without naming father ) was a highly respected amora of the third generation in Babylonia and lived and worked the end of the third / early fourth century AD.

He moved from Palestine to Babylonia, where he was in close contact to R. Judah in Pumbedita and R. Nahman bar Jacob Mahuza, but returned to repeatedly visit back to his homeland.

Ulla died in Babylonia, but was transferred to Palestine.

He belongs to the Amoraim mentioned in the Gemara most often.

At Haggadic sayings is narrated from him, among other things: " Since the destruction of the sanctuary God has only the four cubits of halachah. " ( Babyl. Berachot 8a ).
