Life

From a Silesian family of merchants coming and the son of a lawyer Charlottenburg, Bielschowsky studied law and political science at Geneva and Berlin and received his doctorate in 1934 at the University of Bonn on succession. After the " takeover " by the NSDAP Bielschowsky looked but because of his Jewish origin and the racial laws prevented in a planned legal career, so he emigrated in 1934 to New York.

In emigration he married on May 12, 1941 in New York Kadidja Wedekind ( 1911-1994 ), daughter of the writer Frank Wedekind, who emigrated in 1937 and worked at theaters in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Here he took American citizenship and the last name " Biel " to. Biel was employed as a consultant of General Patton.

After the end of World War II Biel returned as a captain in the U.S. Army back to Berlin and entered into the service of the U.S. State Department and was used in the Allied commander for the city of Berlin.

Biel was considered a gray eminence and confessed anti-communist. Biel moved the Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats Gustav Dahrendorf Ernst Lemmer to escape from the Soviet zone. The career of Ernst Reuter was supported by Biel, against his inner-party opponents, the short-term Mayor Otto Ostrowski.

His friends included Henry Kissinger and Zbigniew Brzezinski, who came in the late 1950s to his house warming to Dahlem / Zehlendorf.
