The river Ume älv, officially Umeälven springs from the lake Överuman at the Swedish- Norwegian border and flows in a southeasterly direction, the municipalities of Storuman, Lycksele, Vindeln, Vännäs and Umeå in Västerbotten County.

The river passes through the mountains to the Norra Storfjället (1792 m above sea level. NN ) west and flows through the large lake Storuman and other lakes. In the lower reaches of the river flows from the north almost as long Vindelälven into the river. The Ume älv is expanded for the most part. He has a relatively large outflow of 435 m³ / s and there is in it 17 hydropower plants with a power output of ten terawatt hours. It ends after 470 km long running in the Kvarken, the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia. The delta of the Umeälv is on the list of the Ramsar Convention.
