UN Women

  

United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women ( UN Women, German: UN Women ) is a United Nations whose creation was decided by a unanimous resolution of the United Nations General Assembly of 2 July 2010 organ.

Predecessor organizations

UN Women brings together the work of four previously separate, dealing with gender equality and empowerment units of the UN system:

  • Division for the Advancement of Women (Department for Women) (DAW founded 1946)
  • Development Fund for Women United Nations (United Nations Development Fund for Women, UNIFEM, established in 1976 )
  • International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women ( International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women ) ( INSTRAW, established in 1976 )
  • Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women ( Office of the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General for Gender Equality ) ( OSAGI founded 1997)

Tasks

UN Women has completed two major roles. On the one hand it is intergovernmental institutions such as the Commission on the Status of Women in the formulation of policies, global standards and norms to stand by cooperating with civil society and help the Member States also through technical and financial support for the implementation of these standards. On the other hand, is to enable the United Nations system to give an account of their commitment with regard to gender equality and to detect world progress in this direction.
