These range from the ancient symbols on the Phaistos Disc by pictograms from ISO and other standards to Emoji, which were encoded by Japanese mobile phone companies. Not coded for the logos and symbols that are not used in the linear flow of text, such as switching characters that occur only in two-dimensional application.

From letters derived symbols

Many currency symbols are in Unicode Block currency symbol. There are also a number of currency symbols in other blocks that are in the letters of which they are incurred. Symbols of ancient Roman currencies are encoded in Unicode block Old symbols.

The blocks letters like symbols, Mathematical alphanumeric symbols and Arabic mathematical alphanumeric symbols contain mainly letters in special forms of writing that are intended for use in mathematical formulas.

To represent control characters and spaces in documentaries visible, are in the Unicode block symbols for representing control characters corresponding symbols. The Unicode block Various technical character encoding, among other symbols for some special keys on the keyboard, symbols for the programming language APL and other symbols that can be used in technical documentation.

The Unicode block Optical Character Recognition coded some special symbols for OCR-A and MICR.

Geometric shapes

The two blocks frame drawing and block elements include framing characters and other symbols that are used in character-based user interface, for example to display frames. More simple geometric shapes are in the Unicode block Geometric shapes.

Jewelery characters

The Unicode Dingbats block contains a number of jewelry characters that were taken dingbats and other sources from the font ITC Zapf.

Pictograms

Unicode encoding a plurality of icons of all kinds Larger groups are the Eight Trigrams Sixty-four hexagrams and other n-grams from Taixuanjing and different symbols for board games: dice, figures for Chess and Shogi, playing cards, dominoes and Mah - Jongg tiles. Part of it was coded for compatibility with Japanese mobile network standards and their Emojis. These characters can occur in two different styles, the standard text style and the Emoji style. These styles are selected by Variantenselektoren. In Emoji style can such characters are represented even in color and even animated.

Notation

Also sign for various historical and modern notations have their own code points in Unicode, they are in the blocks Byzantine musical notation sign, notation signs and Ancient Greek musical notation sign.

The scores of modern musical notation can also be assembled with the help of Recombinant characters from the note head, stem size and flags if necessary. One possibility for the note and thus the indication of pitch placement is not intended directly and must instead be determined by appropriate file formats.

Braille characters

The sign for the Braille encoded in Unicode block Braille characters in logical order. How they are to be interpreted depends on the language and is not set to Unicode. The Braille characters are different from the other symbols in that they are viewed as a separate system of writing in Unicode.
