United Arab Emirates parliamentary election, 2006

The elections to the Federal National Council of the United Arab Emirates began in 2006 for the first time in the history of the UAE in December 2006.

Electoral process

The elections to the Federal National Council (English Federal National Council - FNC ) were held on the following dates:

  • December 16, 2006 in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah
  • December 18, 2006 in Dubai and Ras al -Khaimah
  • December 20, 2006 in Sharjah, Umm al - Qaiwain and Ajman

For the FNC, which has 40 seats, 20 members are elected. The others are appointed by the governments of the respective Emirates. Also appointed by the Government of the 6,689 voters, including 1,189 women.

Result

The first woman to win a seat in the FNC, Dr. Amal Abdullah Juma Karam Al Qubaisi.

The selections seats are distributed as follows among the Emirates:

  • 4 seats for Abu Dhabi
  • 4 seats for Dubai
  • 3 seats for Sharjah
  • 3 seats for Ra's al -Khaimah
  • 2 seats for Fujairah
  • 2 seats for Umm al- Qaiwain
  • 2 seats for Ajman

The turnout was 60.2 per cent in Abu Dhabi with 3,630 registered voters in the electoral lists. In Fujairah, the turnout was 80 percent.
