United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development ( United Nations Conference on English Sustainable Development, short UNCSD ) was held from 20 to 22 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro instead. Short as Rio in 2012 called, or on the 1992 carried out the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development called in allusion Rio 20, the UNCSD should achieve the following three objectives:

  • Securing renewed political commitment for sustainable development

Decision and preparation process

The United Nations General Assembly met the decision to hold the Rio 20 Conference, at a meeting on December 24, 2009. Ahead of UNCSD, a total of three sessions of a Preparatory Committee ( Preparatory Committee, in short PrepCom ) be held to thematic and organizational to clarify questions. PrepCom 1 ran from 16 to 18 May 2010, and PrepCom 2 took place from 28 February to 4 March 2011. PrepCom 3 was held from 13 to 15 June 2012 and immediately in front of the conference. In the unanimously adopted by the participants Final Declaration of the UNCSD, matches the text with the developed before the conference negotiations draft, the commitment is expressed both on sustainable business management as well as the model of the Green Economy, common goals in the fight against hunger, poverty, soil erosion, climate change and its consequences formulated and reiterated the Millennium Development Goals for 2015 and the results of previous environmental summit. In the final declaration, no binding agreements for the implementation of the stated goals are included, so that non-governmental organizations and representatives of civil society explain the negotiations failed.
