United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women

 

The International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women ( English: International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women, INSTRAW ) was a special organ of the United Nations (UN).

It was built on the recommendation of the World Conference of the International Women's Year in Mexico in 1975 by the UN Economic and Social Council. INSTRAW began operations in 1979 - 1983 was their headquarters in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. INSTRAWs focused on the role of women in the development process and promote them through research and education. The Institute funded by donations contributions that were mostly provided by government bodies or private donors available. The management of INSTRAW consisted of 11 people: a representative of the Secretary-General, the Director of the Institute, one representative of five regional economic commissions, a representative of the host country and representatives of three countries which were elected by the UN Economic and Social Council. In addition, INSTRAW support of speakers, volunteers of the UN as well as an active internship program received. Quite contrary to the objectives of the Institute, the percentage of women has decreased in the parliaments of the United Nations from 14.8 % in 1988 to 11.3 % in 1995.

INSTRAW went on in the newly established by resolution 64/ 289 of the United Nations General Assembly United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women in July 2010.
