United Nations Iraq–Kuwait Observation Mission

The United Nations Iraq - Kuwait Observation Mission ( German observer mission of the United Nations Iraq- Kuwait, UNIKOM ) was a peacekeeping mission of the United Nations in the Middle East after the Second Gulf War. It was based on UN Resolution 689 of 9 April 1991 and was used from April 1991 in Iraq and Kuwait; their mandate ended on 6 October 2003.

The aim of the mission was to monitor the demilitarized zone on the border of Iraq and Kuwait. She was led from headquarters in Umm Qasr / Iraq. Originally 300 military observers and civilian additional forces were mandated. Later, the overall strength of the Mission increased to over 3,600 employees; at takeoff, it consisted of four military observers and 131 civilian employees.
