United Nations Security Council Resolution 550

Resolution 550 of the UN Security Council on May 11, 1984 deals with the situation in Cyprus.

On 15 November 1983 the Turkish Cypriot politician Rauf Denktash proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by Turkish forces since July 20, 1974 in Operation Attila militarily occupied the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Three days later, on 18 November 1983, the UN Security Council had this proclamation and the cleavage condemned and demanded their withdrawal.

On 11 May 1984, the Security Council again considered the political situation in Cyprus and adopted during this his 2539 meeting with 13 votes, one vote against (Pakistan ) and 1 abstention (United States of America) the following resolution. :

Resolution text

The Security Council,

  • Having considered the request of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, the situation in Cyprus,
  • After hearing the remarks of the President of the Republic of Cyprus,
  • The report of the Secretary Noting
  • Its resolutions 365 (1974), 367 (1975), 541 (1983) and 544 (1983) remembered calling,
  • Deeply regret that its resolutions were not implemented, in particular resolution 541 (1983),
  • Deeply concerned about further secessionist acts in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus, 541 (1983) violate the resolution, including the purported exchange of ambassadors between Turkey and the legally invalid " Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus " and the contemplated " referendum on the constitution " and " elections ", as well as other actions or threats of action with the aim to consolidate the alleged independent state and to deepen the division of Cyprus
  • Deeply concerned about the recent threats of a settlement of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants,
  • Reaffirming its continued support for the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus,
