United Nations Statistical Commission

The UN Statistical Commission ( STATCOM, UN Statistical Commission ), the Commission of the United Nations, the work of the Statistical Division of the United Nations ( UNSD, UN Statistics Division ) is monitored. The statistical work of the UN operates under the symbol UNSTATS.

STATCOM

The UN Statistical Commission is an advisory body to the UN Economic and Social Council ( Economic and Social Council ), which in turn is an organ of the UN. The STATCOM can thus be regarded as the highest statistical organ at the world level.

The annual meeting of the STATCOM is the end of February in New York. Members are the directors of national statistical offices.

UNSD

The tasks of the Statistical Division of the United Nations are:

  • To promote international comparability of statistical data and the cooperation of the National Statistical Offices ( Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities CCSA )
  • To formulate ethical principles in the context of statistics
  • To define classifications, methods and indicators
  • To develop standards for the global statistics
  • Under the Millennium Development Goals to coordinate the collection of the necessary for the evaluation of statistical data

They developed country or area codes for statistical purposes. They used both three -digit numeric codes and three-digit alphabetical codes assigned by ISO ( see ISO 3166 and ISO -3166 -1 Kodierliste ).
