Unity and Progress Party

The Party of Unity and Progress ( Parti de l' Unité et french du Progres, abbreviation PUP) is a political party in Guinea. She was the ruling party during the long rule of former President Lansana Conté.

In the parliamentary election held on 30 June 2002, the party won 61.57 % of the votes and a total of 85 of the 114 seats in the National Assembly. Its candidate in the presidential election of 21 December 2003, Lansana Conté, won 95.25 % of the vote; this choice, however, was generally boycotted by the opposition.

After the death of Conté on 22 December 2008, the military took over the power immediately and ended the authoritarian rule of the PUP. The party was restricted after the coup in their power. They nominated Abubakar Somparé, a prominent figure in the Conté regime, as its candidate for the presidential election in June 2010, but received only a little over 1 % of the vote.
