History

The Human Rights Party was founded in 1992 by members of Omonia, an association representing the political, social and cultural interests of the Greeks. The Omonia had in all five constituencies in which they came into office, won the parliamentary elections in March 1991. Because parties were banned with ethnic orientation as a result, it came to the establishment of the Human Rights Party, was to be found in the statute no reference to its Greek character. Because the 1998 Constitution came into force in Albania prohibiting the establishment of political parties based on ethnicity was largely abolished.

Since 1997, the Human Rights Party was usually closely associated with the Albanian socialists. In the last four parliamentary elections, the PBDNJ always approached in an election alliance with them; and from 1997 to 2005 she was represented in the socialist-led coalition governments. Since 2005, the PBDNJ a minister in the coalition government led by the Democrats, but decided before the 2009 elections, to switch back to the camp of socialists. In the election in June, the Human Rights Party won only one seat in parliament, the party chairman Vangjel Dule took. Because the Socialists Parliament boycott for alleged election fraud, Dule was present as the only member of the Opposition at the opening of Parliament and the swearing in of the Government.
