The internationally oriented University College Maastricht ( UCM) is a college of the liberal arts (English: Liberal Arts ) of the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands. The college offers a three-year English-language and interdisciplinary studies Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. History

The college was founded in 2002 as the second of its kind in the Netherlands. Studies at UCM

Form of study

University College Maastricht taught according to the principles of problem-based learning ( PBL). Here, the students themselves determine learning goals that they work on the basis of literature and discussions in small groups of a maximum of twelve students. The tutorials are held twice a week per course. The tutor transfers only the role of a guide and not the teacher in these meetings. In each course once a week lectures are held. In modules of each seven weeks students take at UCM, two main courses and a so-called Skills Course.

Academic focus

At UCM courses are offered in three different disciplines, this would be:

  • Humanities (English: Humanities )
  • Social Sciences (German: Social Sciences )
  • Life Sciences (German: Natural Sciences )

Students take in the course of their studies to a fixed concentration. However, there is also opportunity to design an interdisciplinary study. Here, the student chooses two of the above directions. Thus, the students create their own curriculum. The humanities concentration includes the following academic areas: philosophy, literature, art, history, cultural studies, European studies and media studies. The scientific orientation covers biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics and Sustainable Development. The social science concentration includes sociology, psychology, business administration, economics, international relations, international law, political science and public administration.

Academic core courses

The core courses ( core courses) are courses that are intended to serve the general education of the students. The aim of the core courses is to impart basic knowledge in the fields of philosophy, history and science. The courses are called:

  • Contemporary World History ( Contemporary World History from 1945)
  • Modeling Nature ( Scientific models )
  • Philosophy of Science ( Philosophy of science / philosophy )
  • Political Philosophy ( Political Philosophy )

In addition to the four core courses, students must also demonstrate four courses outside their concentration. Study someone for example philosophy ( and thus consequently the concentration in humanities), the person must provide proof of courses in the other two concentrations.

Academic advisor

The role of the academic advisor (English: Academic Advisor ) is to assist the student in his choice of courses and thus in the compilation of their individual curriculum. Meetings between student and advisor at least twice a year.

Statements

The studies at UCM you can complete a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. These are staggered with the Awards Honors, Summa Cum laude and cum laude.
