The Universidad del Cauca is a public university in the city of Popayan in Colombia.

History

Founded as the University in November 1827. Supported you from the beginning of the liberation by Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander. Several higher education decrees of Simón Bolívar were written within the University of Cauca. The university has its roots were in the educational institutions of the colonial period, the impact on innovative ideas in philosophy, political science of the Enlightenment in the 18th century. There, the generation of the later protagonists of the independence fighters was formed against the Spanish Empire as Francisco José de Caldas, Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera and Camilo Torres. The history of the independence of Colombia and his beginnings as an independent republic represents the history of the university.

In the 20th century, the University of Cauca students from different regions of the country, but especially from the southwest of Colombia attracted. Seventeen graduates of the University of Cauca who previously worked in the Colombian government.

The Historical Archive of the University in the old town of Popayan has a collection of documents from the colonial period and independence that is considered by historians and social scientists. It was founded in 1970, José María Arboleda Llorente listed since 1928 until his death in 1969, about 24,000 documents. This fund consists of records of the Governor of Popayán, the independent Caucastaates, Cauca and the judicial archives.
