The University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of the state universities in Ghana. It is located 12 km north- east of Accra in the suburb of Legon. At the University of about 24,000 students are enrolled.

History

The university was founded in 1948 as University College of the Gold Coast. Originally, the University of Ghana was closely associated with the University of London, which, for example, gave the academic degrees. With the attainment of university status in 1961 they became independent. First, the research and teaching focus was on the humanities and social sciences, agriculture and medicine, but has been extended as part of a national education reform on technology-oriented sciences.

Faculties

The University of Ghana is situated in 3 locations on the main campus in Legon to study about 21,000 students, on the Accra - campus and 1,800 at the Korle -Bu campus about 840 students. The University consists of the College of Health Sciences and 11 faculties:

  • Nursing
  • Arts
  • Agriculture
  • Medicine
  • Natural sciences
  • Law
  • Social sciences
  • Management (including Economics )
  • Dentistry

There are also a number of other disciplines, institutes and research centers, which are not assigned a faculty:

  • Department of performing arts (theater, music and dance)
  • Institute of Statistics, African studies, adult education, medical research, population studies, public health, communication sciences
  • Centers for social policy analysis, remote sensing and geographic information systems, international relations, African music and dance, tropical pharmacology and therapeutics, biotechnology, African wetlands and languages.

Origin of foreign students

Of the 779 enrolled foreign students in 2005 came 320 from Nigeria, 264 from the USA, 34 from Liberia, 23 from Canada, 10 to 20 students each from Benin, Ivory Coast, Great Britain, Norway, Sierra Leone and Togo. Less than every 10 students came from 24 other countries, including two from Germany.
