The University of Hong Kong (English The University of Hong Kong, Chinese香港 大学) is an English- and the oldest university in the Chinese city of Hong Kong. It is located in the west of the island of Hong Kong itself.

History

The University of Hong Kong dates back to the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese, founded in 1887 by the Anglican London Missionary Society (London Missionary Society). The university itself was first created, meant when Sir Frederick Lugard as Governor of Hong Kong, one must establish a university in or near China to catch up with other European powers (especially with Prussia, founded shortly before the Tongji University in Shanghai had ).

On March 16, 1910 Sir Frederick Lugard laid the foundation stone of the main building with the words, you " reasons ( a university ) for China." In 1912, the university opened its philosophical science, engineering and medical schools. The Faculty of Medicine was founded as a " Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese " by the London Missionary Society in 1887.

On 5 June 1997, the Pillar of Shame was erected building at the podium of the Haking Wong for the first time.

In the winter semester 2008/2009, the University of Hong Kong had around 21,650 students.
