The University of Jyväskylä (Finnish: Jyväskylä yliopisto ) is a state university in the Finnish city of Jyväskylä with approximately 16,000 students and 2,300 academic staff ( 2005).

The University of Jyväskylä goes back to the first Finnish-language school from 1863, which in 1937 became the university and received university status in the 1960s.

Faculties

The University of Jyväskylä has seven faculties:

  • Faculty of Human Sciences
  • Faculty of Information Technology
  • Faculty of Education
  • Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
  • Faculty of Economics
  • Faculty of Social Sciences

Overall, students can choose from 80 major and 100 minor subjects.

Campus

The campus of the university is divided into three parts which can be easily reached by foot or bicycle. The northernmost part of the university is the Seminaarinmäki. This is followed by the Mattilanniemi affiliated with. A bridge over the Jyväsjärvi, the lake at the Jyväskylä is located, leads to Ylistönrinne where mainly science subjects are taught. Buildings on the campus third - part Ylistönrinne as well as some other parts of the building were designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.
