University of La Laguna

The University of La Laguna (Spanish Universidad de La Laguna ) is a public university in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna in Tenerife.

History of the University and its predecessor

Until 1927

The beginning of the academic teaching in the Canary Islands can be dated back to 1701 when the Augustinian monks einrichteten a center for higher religious studies in La Laguna. In 1816, a royal decree ordered again in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna with the same privileges and advantages set up a university like they were granted in the rest of the Kingdom and to designate this University of San Fernando. Thus the building of the Compañía de Jesús became the seat of the Universidad Literaria de San Fernando. It was opened on 12 January 1817. It turned out, however, soon realized that the building was inadequate for the growing number of students. Therefore, various institutions of the university were moved to the Augustinian Monastery. In December 1821 started the entire facilities of the university to relocate there. After in 1837 the monastery was dissolved during the Desarmortizazión, here was the center of the university. The building of the Compañía de Jesús was continued for public entertainment and home of the library is important. The Sociedad Real Sociedad Económica Patriótica and the de Amigos del País got rooms in the building of the Jesuit Order ( the Compañía de Jesús ). By a royal decree of 1845 the number of universities in Spain was limited to ten and set up the training college in the Augustinian monastery is the only high school in the Canary Islands ( Instituto de Canarias ). During the visit of King Alfonso XIII. (Spain ) in 1906 in the high school in the Augustinian monastery in La Laguna, the director Adolfo Cabrera Pinto took the opportunity to ask the King, the University of San Fernando set up again. The first results of this request resulted in the Royal Decree of 1913, in which the establishment of a Philososophischen and a Faculty of Philology and the preparation of a law faculty were arranged. The departments of the university have been extended to preparation courses in the subjects of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1917. In 1921, the Law were added, so that the city of La Laguna was able to watch as a university town.

From 1927

Only in the year 1927, the University of La Laguna was established by the Royal Decree of 21 September. The gradual growth of the faculties led to considerations new building for the University to build. 1929 a public competition for the construction of a university building and a student dormitory was announced. The proposals designed by the architect Ceballos was selected. In 1935 was started the construction work but did not progress and were set during the time of the Civil War. The resumed construction work on the buildings of the Campus Central were carried out according to the plans of José Enrique Marrero Regalado and Domingo Pisaca. In 1942, the Department of Classical Languages ​​Faculty of Philosophy was able to move into the building. In 1960 the whole building was handed over to the Central Campus today its determination. With new facilities, the Universidad de La Laguna has been extended. It created the departments of English Studies (1963 ), Biology (1967) and mathematics (1969). At the same time (1968 ), the Medical Faculty was created. The further development of the educational institution was marked by the inclusion of new fields of study which the University can compete with the leading universities of Spain today. In 1972, the College of Business Administration was created and started with the training of teachers. A year later the construction technology was added. The Faculty of Pharmacy was founded in 1974, which was of Economics 1975. 1977, the year of creation of the College of Nursing. A year later, the college was affiliated for Social Work and in 1979 the Academy of Fine Arts in Santa Cruz. In 1982, the old Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities was divided into separate faculties of Philology, Philosophy, Psychology, Educational Science and Geography and History. The 1990, years were marked by the creation of a new type of educational institutions in the system of Spanish universities. This " Centros " geared more closely to the requirements of professional practice. Campus

  • The Campus Central is located southeast of the historic city of La Laguna. Here are the buildings the most common equipment and the Faculty of Education to be used from the first time the university.
  • The Campus de Anchieta is seen from the campus of Central on the other side of the northern motorway. This campus is primarily used by the scientific faculties.
  • The campus Guajara built north of the highway especially for the humanities faculties.
  • The campus Ofra includes two university hospitals in the Hospital Universitario and the Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria.
  • The Academy is in the north of Santa Cruz. The conservatory on the other side of the thoroughfare is not part of the University.
