University of La Rochelle

The University of La Rochelle (French: Université de La Rochelle ) was opened in 1993. It is located in a new district of La Rochelle between Ville en Bois and Minimes. During the summit of La Rochelle, French President François Mitterrand and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, in 1992 the foundation stone for the University.

Originally it should only be an offshoot of the University of Poitiers ( Université de Poitiers). Local politicians, especially the mayor Michel Crépeau, but exerted pressure that creates an independent university.

The University of La Rochelle has about 6,000 students and has five disciplines:

  • Law ( Droit )
  • Environment and coastal areas ( Environnement et Espaces Littoraux )
  • Management ( Gestion )
  • Arts and Humanities ( Lettres, Langues, Arts et sciences humaines )
  • Natural Sciences ( Science and Technology).

The educational institution newly founded located near three major French universities - Nantes, Bordeaux and Poitiers ( each about 150 to 180 km). For the University of La Rochelle, therefore, there was some need to develop a distinctive profile. There are many teaching and research issues related to the sea:

  • Corrosion, especially corrosion in the port area ( Physics / Chemistry )
  • Marine biology,
  • Coastal region ( Geography / Geophysics ).
