University of Lapland

The University of Lapland (Finnish Lapin yliopisto ) is the northernmost university in Finland and the European Union. It was founded on 1 March 1979 and has its headquarters in Rovaniemi. The University Group University of the Arctic, whose International Secretariat also is based in Rovaniemi, it belongs to.

Development
In 1979, the educational institution was founded as the University College of Lapland. Since 1 January 1991 it has the status of a university and is the only college in the region of Lapland. Since 1 August 2006, the doctorate in medical Mauri Ylä- Kotola is the new rector for five years and thus replaced the longtime rector Esko Riepula.
