University of Oñati

The University of Oñate ( in Basque: Oñatiko Unibertsitatea, Spanish: Universidad de Oñate ) was founded in 1540 by the humanist Bishop Rodrigo Mercado de Zuazola of Oñate under the name Universitas Sancti Spiritus and had its first seat in Hernani. In 1548 it moved to Oñate, where since 1543 under the patronage of Charles V the university building was created, today the most important Renaissance building of the Basque Country.

Study subjects were theology, law, canon law, arts and medicine. In the 19th century it was in the revolution of 1868 the Universidad Libre ( Free University ), among the Carlists to the Real y Pontificia Universidad Vasco - Navarra ( Royal and Pontifical Basque - Navarrese University ). In 1901 it was closed after 1886 Deusto district of Bilbo (Bilbao) which is under direction of the Jesuits Deusto University ( in Basque: Deustuko Unibertsitatea ) was founded.

Today, the University of Oñate building houses the Instituto Internacional de Sociología Jurídica / International Institute for the Sociology of Law ( International Institute for Sociology of Law ).
