The University of Ryukyu (Japanese琉球 大学, Ryūkyū daigaku, English University of the Ryukyus, for short. Ryudai (琉 大) ) is a state university in Japan. The main campus is located in Nishihara in Okinawa Prefecture.

History

Before the Pacific War, there was no college / technical school in the prefecture of Okinawa. During the war, the Normal School Okinawa received (冲 縄 师范学校, Okinawa shihan Gakko, founded in 1880 ) and the Youth Normal School Okinawa (冲 縄 青年 师范学校, Okinawa his shihan Gakko, founded in 1935 ), the specialist school status, but in 1945 they were destroyed.

The Ryukyu University was founded in 1950 by the U.S. civil government of the Ryukyu Islands. The University was originally located in the former Shuri Castle ( in Naha, 26 ° 13 '1 "N, 127 ° 43 ' 10" O26.216977777778127.71936944444 ) and consisted of six faculties: English language, education, social sciences, natural sciences, agronomy, and Applied Liberal Arts. From 1966 to 1972 it was borne by the Government of the Ryukyu Islands ( GRI).

On May 15, 1972, when the Ryukyu Islands were returned to Japan, the university was one of the Japanese national universities. 1977, the current Sembaru campus was reopened, and over the years attracted the faculties of the Shuri Castle after Sembaru to ( then could the Shuri Castle to be rebuilt ). 1984 pulled the Faculty of Medicine ( founded in 1979 ) in the new Nishihara Campus has to offer.
