The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover ( TiHo, full name University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover ) is a foundation university in Lower Saxony. It is the oldest independent veterinary medical teaching institution in Germany and is one of the most prestigious veterinary universities worldwide.

At the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover include six hospitals, 18 institutes, three areas of expertise and an institute. It also has two branches, one in Ruthe in the south of Hanover and one in Vechta in Vechta. Gerhard Greif is its current president. In the winter semester 2008/09, 1,523 students of veterinary medicine were enrolled. In addition, 758 doctoral students and 39 master students.

History

The School of Veterinary Medicine was founded on July 18, 1778 on the instructions of George III. founded under the name " Roßarzney school". First, it was housed in the building of an old military bakery before Clevertor. The Oberhofroßarzt Johann Adam Kersting, a Kurschmied and Oberhofroßarzt from Kassel, was from 1778 to 1784, the first director of the school. Kersting was assisted by August Conrad Havemann, a stud assistant from Celle. Studying at the School Roßarzney took then a year, even though the students often stayed a second year. Since education was not necessary, the students were selected by the director. From about 1814, the compartments cattle medicine, botany, animal diseases, scientific physics and chemistry were included in the curriculum. On August Conrad Havemann followed in 1819 Ulrich Friedrich Hausmann as director of the school, ran it until 1846 and took place with his work at a time when teaching and research even under the most difficult conditions, made ​​a valuable contribution to the further development of the institution. Johann Heinrich Friedrich Günther was from 1847 to 1858 director. Under his leadership, a science-based education has been introduced. From 1859 to 1870 the school director Andreas Christian Gerlach was conducted. He expanded the curriculum considerably and built the school from spatially. Under the direction of Charles John Dammann, the last director ( 1881-1912 ), was in 1887 the "Royal School of Veterinary Medicine ," written "Royal Thierarzney school," raised by Cabinet Order to college, wrote "Royal thier medical Hochschule Hannover ". 1899, the school was relocated to its still used today on location Bischofsholer dam and the Braunschweiger Platz. For the full university status in 1910 by the College got the promotions and the habilitation degrees (1918).

In 2003, the university was transformed into a foundation university. It is the only five veterinary medical teaching centers in Germany, which has preserved its independence until today.

Study

Veterinary Medicine

The study of veterinary medicine is regulated by the Regulation on the approval of veterinarians and veterinary surgeons ( TAppV ). The normal period is five years and six months ( 11 semester).

Research

The research areas of the TiHo are in the areas of infection medicine, clinical research, systemic neuroscience and animal health and food quality. Many problems can be worked in inter-university cooperations or in collaboration with industry. Of particular note are three of the German Research Foundation ( DFG) Collaborative Research Centre ( SFB). Next TiHo is involved in the Excellence Cluster "From Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy" ( REBIRTH ).

Service
