Unni (bishop)

Unni († September 17 936 in Birka ) was 916-936 Archbishop of Bremen and Hamburg.

About its origin is not known. As a Unno 916 elected by the people and the cathedral chapter Leidrad escorted to his appointment as Archbishop of King Conrad I was rather sorry Rich even given him by the king of the shepherd's crook.

Unni continued the neglected under Hoger and Reginwart Nordic mission. This had now to suffer serious setbacks. In Denmark watched Gorm the Old, the missionary work of Ansgar and Rimbert Christians. It was only when Henry I was able to advance through the loop away to Denmark, Gorm the priests had to grant access to its land and put them under his protection. In Gorm 's son, Harald Blaatand Unni found a willing supporter. Following his first predecessor Ansgar he personally took over the mission in the Danish islands and traveled to Sweden. There, in Birka, he fell ill just before he wanted to go home, and died on September 17, 936 His head was brought back to Bremen and buried before the high altar of the Bremen Cathedral. The grave mound in Birka, under rested his body, was long as consecrated place.

Unni neglected, only the Nordic mission in mind, the turn mission. This was done to him later criticized because, unlike the Danes and Swedes, the Wends were part of the Empire.
