Uplay

Uplay is an Internet distribution platform for computer games and software, which is developed and operated by Ubisoft.

Functions

With the release of Assassin's Creed II in 2009, Ubisoft launched the Uplay network. Uplay allows you to connect with other players and gain rewards when certain achievements, so-called "Actions " are met.

Each Uplay -enabled game has four specific actions that can be met. The player receives Uplay units for the fulfillment of these actions. Every action rewards the player with 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 or 40 units, which can be used to unlock game rewards. The units are not tied to a specific game. It is therefore possible to issue the units that were developed in a particular game in another game for rewards.

DRM

The Windows version of Uplay needed first a permanent internet connection to be able to play Uplay enabled games. Games could be without an active internet connection does not start and stopped when the Internet connection is lost. Depending on the game you were saved to his last save point or reset the game at the current position. Some games, such as Assassin's Creed II were later updated to the exact position of the player to save before an Internet interruption. At this position could be weitergespeilt as soon as the Internet connection is restored. This behavior quickly came under criticism when, after a DOS attack on the Ubisoft DRM server, the game Silent Hunter 5 and Assassin's Creed II were unplayable for several days.

The end of 2010 the online constraint was first released and it was just a validation after starting the game required. With the 2011 released games Driver: San Francisco and From Dust the online constraint for these games was reintroduced. From Dust was later given a patch that removed the online forced back.

In September 2012, Ubisoft employee confirmed in an interview that future games would no longer get online compulsion, but only one activation during the game installation.
