Urbano Navarrete Cortés

Cardinal Urbano Navarrete Cortés, SJ ( born May 25, 1920 in Camarena de la Sierra in the province of Teruel, Aragon, † November 22, 2010 in Rome) was a Spanish, Catholic theologian and canonist, and high school teachers and university rector.

Life

Urbano Navarrete took effect on June 20, 1937 at the Congregation of the Jesuits in the province of Aragon, and studied humanities at the Centro del Monasterio de Veruela in Zaragoza, philosophy at the Jesuit Institute Quimic de Sarria in Barcelona and theology at the Colegio Máximo de Oña in Burgos. He received the 1952 Eucharistic Congress in Barcelona, the sacrament of Holy Orders. He then completed his doctoral studies in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After further graduate studies in humanities, he taught at the Centro del Monasterio de Veruela.

Navarrete was founded in 1958 professor of canon law, especially marriage law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was from 1974 to 1980 and from 1986 to 1995 Dean of the Law Faculty. With appointment by Pope John Paul II, he was from 1980 to 1986 rector of the Gregorian University.

Navarrete was consultant to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the Commission for the reform of the Code of Canon Law for the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Apostolic Signatura.

24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Ponziano in the College of Cardinals. Although canon law cardinals are supposed to be bishops, Navarrete was dispensed for reasons of age by the pope of this obligation.

Urbano Navarrete has published over 150 scientific papers and works. In October 2007, a book was published in Madrid with his collected essays on canonical marriage law " Derecho Canonico matrimonial. Evolución a la luz del Concilio Vaticano II ". Urbano Navarrete was honored with honorary doctorates from the Pontifical University of Salamanca (1994 ) and the Catholic Pázmány Péter University in Budapest ( 2000).
