Ures

Ures ( formally Heroica Ciudad de Ures ) is the name of a small town in the Mexican state of Sonora. Ures Ures is located in the municipality, the administrative center it is.

General

Ures is located in the basin of the Río Sonora in the western Sierra Madre at 420 m above sea level. The vegetation of the surrounding area consists of mesquite ( Prosopis velutina ) and other desert shrubs, including, which is home Sonoran Palmetto Sabal Palm uresana.

Ures is one of the oldest settlements in Sonora. It was founded by a Jesuit missionary and contributed to 1665 the name of San Miguel. In 1838 it became a town and was until 1879 the capital of Sonora, then the seat of the district administration until it was abolished in 1917.

Ures in 1870 and 1882 had to suffer from Apache raids, as the chief Geronimo and his men retreated to the Sierra Madre in front of the U.S. troops from Arizona. Even with the Yaqui Indians settled here there were problems in the late 19th century. On 5 September 1998 Ures received the honorary title " Hero City " for the successful defense of the city against the French during the reign of Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg.

The tourism offers Ures some attractions such as La Plaza de Armas (La Plaza de Zaragoza ) with four bronze sculptures from the 18th century, the Mission and the San Miguel church with the Mesquite - stairs, and the Folklore Museum.
