Uromastyx

Egyptian thorn tail ( Uromastyx aegyptia )

Uromastyx is a genus of lizards of the family of spiny-tailed lizards ( Uromasticinae ). The 15 species of the genus occur in North and Northeast Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Mauritania, Mali and Niger), in all the states on the Arabian Peninsula, as well as in a narrow strip along the north coast of the Persian Gulf to the Iranian city of Bandar Abbas. The genus was described in 1820 by the German biologist Blasius Merrem.

Features

The most prominent characteristic of the genus is the thick, reinforced with prickly scales tail, a feature that also true of the second kind of the spine tails, Saara true. In contrast to the Saara Schuppenwirtel of the tail are not separated by transverse rows of smooth or grained scales at Uromastyx. How Saara and all other Agamas Uromastyx has a acrodonte dentition (teeth sit on the top of the jaw). The sharp premaxillary bone ( premaxilla ) replaced in adult animals the incisors.
