Urs Jenal

Urs Jenal ( born December 31, 1961 in Alvaneu ) is a Swiss microbiologist and research at the Biozentrum, University of Basel.

Life

Urs Jenal studied Experimental Biology at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate there in 1991. Subsequently, he completed post- doctorates at the ETH Zurich and Stanford University. Since 1996, researches and teaches Jenal at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, first as an assistant professor and since 2002 as a professor of molecular microbiology.

Work

Urs Jenal explored the molecular basis of signal transduction that controls the growth, development and behavior of bacteria. International attention was Jenal through his discovery of a new pathway, which is based on a new cyclic di - nucleotide (c- di -GMP) and the formation of microbial biofilms which coordinates and contributes to the development of chronic bacterial infections. In the model bacterium Caulobacter crescentus, he discovered that c- di-GMP controls the transition from motile bacteria to sedentary biofilm - forming mold and this process coordinated with the replication cycle of the cells. Recent work investigating the importance of c- di-GMP signaling network for chronic lung infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in patients with cystic fibrosis (cystic fibrosis).
