Ursula Engelen-Kefer

Ursula Engelen- Kefer ( born June 20, 1943 in Prague as Ursula Kefer ) was from 1990 to 2006 deputy chairman of the German Trade Union Federation ( DGB). Currently she is a lecturer at the University of the Federal Employment Agency in Schwerin, is a lecturer at the Free University of Berlin, and also conducts the working group in the social Sozialverband Germany ( SoVD ). Ursula Engelen- Kefer from 1986 to 2009 Member of the executive committee of the SPD and scored in the general election on 27 September 2009 as a direct candidate in the constituency Ingolstadt 15.4% of the primary vote. In July 2009, she was elected Bavaria in the national executive of the SPD.

Life

Ursula Engelen- Kefer studied economics at the University of Cologne and was founded in 1970 with the work " retraining in a growing economy - the examples of the USA" doctorate. At first she was a freelance journalist in New York worked later as a researcher at the Economic and Social Research Institute of the DGB. In 1974 she was Head of Division for International Affairs at the DGB. From 1980 to 1984 she was there Head of labor market policy. In 1984 she moved to the Office of the Vice President of the Federal Labour Office.

1990 started off with the DGB Congress Ursula Engelen- Kefer vice-chairman of the German Trade Union Federation. This function she had three times re-election until May 2006. During this time she was alternating Chairman of the Executive Board and Board of Directors later the Federal Employment Agency. In addition, she was for several years also alternate chairman of the board of the German Federal Pension Insurance - formerly Association of German Pension Insurance Institutes. From 1985 to 2010 she was a member of the Chamber of Social Order of the Evangelical Church of Germany and the unions has represented more than two terms in the Synod of the Evangelical Church. Also she was two terms a member of the Senate of the Max Planck Society and a member of the ZDF Television Council.

After the then chairman Heinz -Werner Meyer had died unexpectedly just before the DGB Congress in 1994, took over as acting Engelen- Kefer the chair. The DGB nominated but Dieter Schulte, member of the board of IG Metall, for the presidency of the DGB. After four terms of office to Engelen- Kefer decided on the DGB Congress in Berlin in 2006 to a renewed bid. In the vote on May 23, 2006, she was defeated Ingrid Sehrbrock (CDU ), which was proposed by the Chairman of the eight unions. For Ursula Engelen- Kefer 161 delegates voted for Ingrid Sehrbrock 212 delegates.

At the international level Ursula Engelen- Kefer worked on various committees. From 1991 to 2008, she represented the DGB in the Board of Directors of the International Labour Organisation ( ILO). She was also a member of the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union ( 1978-1986 and 1990-2006 ). She was a member of the Advisory Committee on the European Social Fund ( 1974-1980 ), member of the Executive Committee of the European Trade Union Confederation (1990 to 2006) and member of the Executive Committee of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (1990 to 2006).

Ursula Engelen- Kefer has received several awards at national and international level, in particular the Cross of Merit 1st class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, presented by former Federal Labor Minister Norbert Blum.

On April 28, 2010, the Senate of the University of the German Federal Employment Agency ( HdBA ) Ursula Engelen- Kefer certificate of appointment as Honorary Professor for the subject " International and European labor market and employment policy " at the University of the German Federal Employment Agency - College of Labour Market Management presented with effect from 1 April 2010.

She is married to the business journalists Klaus C. Engelen and has two sons.
