Ursula K. Le Guin

Ursula Kroeber Le Guin [ ɝsələ kʁø: bɐ ləgwɪn ] ( born October 21, 1929 in Berkeley, California, USA, as Ursula Kroeber ) is an American author primarily fantastic and utopian literature ( science fiction and fantasy ).

Life

Ursula K. Le Guin is the daughter of the writer Theodora Kroeber and Professor of Anthropology Alfred Louis Kroeber. She grew up in Berkeley and Napa Valley, studied literature at Harvard University, and focused in particular on the Italian and French Renaissance, what they published some literary theoretical work ( and the subject of later literary processed in their stories from Orsinien and Malafrena ). She received in 1952 from Columbia University with a master's degree with a thesis on Pierre de Ronsard. 1953 she married the professor of history Charles A. Le Guin. Since 1962 she works as a writer in Portland (Oregon ) and teaches at the University.

Work

Although many of her books are set on distant planets, but treat issues that are universally significant. (See also her introduction to The Left Hand of Darkness. ) Her work includes in addition to many novels and children's books, essays, literature reviews and translations.

She has received a number of awards for her books, including several times the two leading international awards for science fiction literature, the Nebula Award and the Hugo Award. The left hand of darkness and Planet of the have-nots each won both prizes, along with Tehanu Powers and the Nebula Award and the word for world is forest the Hugo Award. In 1985, she received the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize from the University of Rochester. Between 1972-2009 she also won a total of four Locus Awards. 1988 and 2002 she received the World Fantasy Award. For her life's work in 1979, she received the Gandalf Grand Master Award, the 2003 Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and the 2004 Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association.
